AVALON – Avalon’s jitney service began in 2013. Initial police reviews credited the service with reducing the number of driving while intoxicated arrests during the summer. Now the financial health of the service is under pressure from ride-share services like Uber.
Avalon merchants who had initially subsidized the service ended those contributions, putting more pressure on the members of the Jitney Association to find effective ways to compete.
The association has requested a price change. Current ordinance rules set the price for a ride at $4 from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. and $2 all other times. Jitney operators want to move to a flat rate of $3 at all times. They argue that the adjustment will allow them to better compete during the higher volume late evening and early morning.
On Feb. 13, Avalon Borough Council agreed in principle to allow the change. A formal vote to alter the ordinance will follow.
