CAPE MAY – The ongoing assessment and environmental testing on the Allen African Methodist Church, on Franklin Street, in Cape May, may require further investigation, according to City Engineer Thomas Thornton, at the May 5 City Council meeting.
Thornton spoke of three areas of continuing concern:

  • Polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances in the groundwater.
  • Non-Natural buildup around an obsolete heating oil tank
  • Asbestos in the ductwork

Thornton indicated that each issue would probably require further investigation, work that goes beyond the city’s investments for the Mott MacDonald preliminary evaluation.
Following a fire that left the historic church needing rehabilitation beyond the financial capabilities of church officials, the city has explored purchasing the property.  The environmental assessments are part of the due diligence leading to any decision of a potential municipal purchase.
Thornton suggested that the next step would be for city officials to hold a conference call with a site remediation expert to consider potential repairs for the property to be useful for the city.
