DIAS CREEK – Judith A. Hansen Mosquito Control Building of the Cape May County Department of Mosquito Control was formally dedicated Oct. 23 in honor of 45-year employee, and 13-year superintendent, Judith A. Hansen of Rio Grande from 1973-2005.
The event was the highlight of the 100th anniversary celebration at the Dias Creek facility that once was a prisoner-of-war camp where Germans were sent during World War II.
In a surprise to Hansen, her family was present to share the honor.
Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton and Freeholder Kristine Gabor, liaison to the department, as well as Dr. Peter Bosak, department superintendent joined in the honor.
Earlier in the program, Robert Kent, retired from the Department of Environmental Protection, who worked for many years with Hansen, who is retired, spoke of the work she did not only locally but statewide, nationally and internationally.
Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) and Assemblyman Samuel Fiocchi (R-1st) presented the department with resolutions attesting to its century milestone.
The building named for Hansen was built by the department’s personnel at Hansen’s urging, since she believed it was important to have a central operating location.
Hansen was also noted for having advocated that the county buy its own helicopters instead of contracting for flight service.
