OCEAN CITY — A total of four syringes have been found on Ocean City beaches on Aug. 28, in what police originally termed an “isolated incident.”
Since the discovery of medical waste on beaches in the 39th Strreet area earlier on Aug. 28, the Ocean City Police Department, lifeguards and beach tag inspectors have been inspecting the shoreline for any additional medical waste items, according to a police release.
As a result of the inspections, two more syringes were discovered at the 45th Street beach and 46th Street. beach. Those beaches were closed immediately east of the high tide line.
All of the closed beaches will remain closed until an early Aug. 29 morning inspection can be conducted after the morning high tide. Beaches will be reopened provided no additional medical waste is found.
Earlier on Aug. 28, crews from Ocean City found a single syringe on the beach at 39th Street. As officials continued to check the shoreline, Cape May County Health Department ordered the areas east of the high tide line from 38th to 40th streets to be shut down until an examination could be conducted.
A single syringe was also found on 36th Street.
The conclusion of the county Health Department was that those materials were not the same type of sate found in Avalon on Aug. 23, and earlier this week.
“The health and welfare of the public visiting the beach continued to be the highest priority,” the release stated.
“If anyone discovers medical waste on the beach, they are asked not to touch it and to notify the Ocean City Police Department immediately,” the release concluded.
