Forfeiture Fund Buys Lower’s Detectives Six Computers

ERMA — Lower Township Detective Division has five new Dell computers that didn’t cost the department or taxpayers anything.
The purchase and installation of those computers totaled about $6,000, and was covered through the department’s Municipal Forfeiture Program.
That program, monitored by the state Division of Criminal Justice and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, allows local police departments to confiscate and seize currency in the possession of persons arrested for possession of illegal drugs/narcotics. Both the department and Prosecutor’s Office receive a percentage of the confiscated currency.
Purchase of the computers had to be requested by Chief Edward Donohue and approved by County Prosecutor Robert Taylor.
Prior to the purchase for the detectives, Lower Township Police Department had approximately $15,000 available in the forfeiture fund. The currency was seized during drug arrests by Lower Township Police Department during the last few years, according to a release.
