Fire Inspector Approved

STONE HARBOR – Fire Chief Roger Stanford made his case before Stone Harbor Borough Council March 19. He gained approval for filling a vacant position of fire inspector in the Fire Bureau.
What brought the issue before the council was a persistent deficit in the bureau where the fee structure has not changed since 2009. That resulted in the bureau’s inability to be self-sustaining.
Stanford outlined the various categories of inspections and the frequency with which they must be done to satisfy either state code or borough ordinance requirements. In 2018, Stanford said the bureau conducted 1,888 individual inspections. All non-owner occupied structures are required to be inspected to ensure they satisfy fire code requirements.
In a summer community like Stone Harbor, this requirement extends to rental properties, making a large portion of the pool of structures subject to review. Stanford said that inspections uncover illegal occupancy problems where unsafe “added bedrooms” create fire-code violations.
Mayor Judith Davies-Dunhour suggested that council look at the fee structure prior to the budget process for 2020. “This is a service that should not be running at a deficit,” she said.
