COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced the graduation of Detective Sgts. William Henfey and Bryan Hamilton from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, Command and Leadership Academy.
This intense 14-week law enforcement training course is geared toward preparing supervisors for the leadership challenges they will face as they rise through the ranks. The course follows the West Point Command and Leadership model of training that is taught to cadets at the U.S. Military Academy and is held two times per year in Northern and Southern New Jersey as well as in New Castle County, Del.
During the 14 weeks, students are taught various theories on leadership and how to apply them to the field of law enforcement. Students are tested three times during the course with a cumulative final exam and a required writing assignment. In the South Class, Henfey achieved the highest grade-point average of the 25 students in his class and therefore received the Chief Harry Wilde Academic Achievement Award.
According to Sutherland, this year also marked the 25th year since the Command and Leadership Academy began in 1993 when the first instructors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police were trained at West Point.
According to the academy, this 14-week course, which is held one day per week, requires on average two-three hours of study for every hour of classroom instruction.
Sutherland congratulated Henfey and Hamilton and was extremely proud of Henfey receiving the Academic Achievement Award. Sutherland also commended the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police for sponsoring the leadership academy and stressed the importance of supervisors continuing to receive the highest caliber of training in the state.
