Dennis to Improve Historic School

By Camille Sailer

DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee discussed the future of the Old Academy schoolhouse Sept. 10.
The municipality purchased the historic property, located at the corner of Petersburg and Academy roads in Dennisville, and had plans to relocate the building to the vacant area adjacent to the museum, which would allow the museum to expand its exhibition space.
The property, built in 1842, is on the state and national historic registers. The municipality was informed that because of the building’s historic standing, moving it is prohibited.
Committee decided that while they continue to explore options for the building, they would invest in maintaining its structural integrity. The municipality intends to shore up the exterior by weatherproofing and painting. Discussions will continue as to the future of the building.
