SWAINTON — It’s official, the 420-foot, $498,060 Crest Haven Pond Boardwalk is open for strollers and anglers.
With a snip of two over-sized scissors, wielded by freeholders, the span opened shortly after 3 p.m. Sept. 27.
If, for example, the County Park Zoo ever were to get a 15,000-pound African elephant, that beast could safely stroll across the new bridge. That’s because, the bridge has a10-ton limit, or 100-pounds per square foot load capacity, according to County Engineer Dale Foster. The deck surface is a composite material, known as Evergrain. Foster said that was selected because it has a grain-like surface, which improves safety over some other composite decking.
The bridge, located between Route 9 and Exit 11 of the Garden State Parkway, runs along Crest Haven Road providing a safe and scenic route from the County Park East to the Park and Zoo, stated a county release.
“The combination of the ponds and guide rails that line Crest Haven Road preclude the installation of sidewalks. This new walkway provides a safe alternative for residents and visitors who park in County Park-East and walk along Crest Haven Road to go the County Zoo,” stated Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel.
The county received a $220,000 Pedestrian Safety Grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation towards the project that was designed by the Cape May County Engineer’s office.
The county awarded R.A. Walters and Son, Inc. of Court House the $498,060 contract to complete the Crest Haven Pond Boardwalk. The work included the pedestrian walkway across the pond, installation of a concrete sidewalk as well as storm water drainage improvements.
