CAPE MAY — The outdoor firing range at the Coast Guard Training Center here has been closed since Oct. 2 after a reflection plate, which prevents bullets from leaving the range, collapsed.
Coast Guard Training Center Spokesperson CWO Veronica Bandrowsky said one of two safety plates fell.
“The turnbuckles in the chains gave way and the platform fell,” she said. “We can’t fire on the range until that safety reflection plate is back up.”
In order not to disrupt training, Coast Guard recruits are being transported by bus to the Federal Aviation Administration Center in Pomona, said Bandrowsky.
The reflection plate fell while crewmembers of the Cutter Vigorous were practicing on the range. No one was injured.
The firing range is expected to be repaired and reopened in about a week and a half, said Bandrowsky.
