County Union League Endorses Thornton, Sheppard for Freeholders

By Herald Staff

COURT HOUSE — Freeholder Gerald M. Thornton and Susan Sheppard, his running mate in the Republican primary in Cape May County, on Thursday, April 1 issued the following statement on the endorsement of their ticket by the Union League of Cape May County:
“We are extremely pleased to have the endorsement of the Union League of Cape May County in support of our ticket in the Republican primary election in Cape May County. The Union League is one of the oldest and most well -respected Republican organizations in the United States.
“Our county chapter has been an engine for Republican candidates and causes for decades. As we’ve been saying, Courage is Contagious. The members of the Union League of Cape May County have proven that by boldly endorsing Jerry Thornton and Sue Sheppard for freeholder.
“We want to thank the members of the Union League for standing up for Republican candidates with integrity and independence,” concluded Thornton and Sheppard.
The following is the Union League release:
The Union League of Cape May County is a Republican organization with its primary goal in support of conservative Republican candidates. Our membership consists of business people, elected officials, teachers, police and firemen, contractors, physicians, attorneys, and other individuals who represent conservative ideals in the Republican Party.
Fortunately, we have our Republican Congressman Frank LoBiondo to represent us in Washington; however, Cape May County has lost its Republican Senate seat and Assembly representation over the past several years.
Jerry Thornton has been a loyal member of the Cape May County Union League for 34 years and has severed a total of 26 years on The Board of Chosen Freeholders as Director of Health and Human Services. His responsibilities include the Health Department of Cape May County, the Office of Veteran Affairs, along with the extensive Social Service issues regarding the senior citizens of this county. He has been instrumental in creating many innovative and quality programs that serve the residents of Cape May County, our seniors, veterans, families, and those in need. His record of serving the residents of Cape May County is impeccable.
His friends, fellow Republicans, Union League members, and colleagues are appalled and outraged regarding the recent disparaging statements and attacks on him and his accomplishments. The most recent meeting of the Cape May County Union League was held March 26 in Cape May, New Jersey. The membership understands loyalty, integrity, and honesty that Jerry Thornton represents and voted unanimously in support of Jerry to continue in his position as Freeholder.
Jerry’s running mate in the primary election on June 8’1′ is Susan Sheppard, President of Council in Ocean City, a good Republican very supportive of stable, conservative Republican principles.
Chris Christie is providing strong, conservative leadership in the Governor’s office, and Frank LoBiondo will continue to represent us in Washington.
Let’s all get behind the Thornton-Sheppard campaign to both maintain and improve the leadership in Cape May County.
Doctor John G. Costino
President, Union League of Cape May County
