COURT HOUSE – June 15: Cape May County reported six new long-term care COVID-19 cases today, all in Middle Township.
After a week in which the county saw only two new cases in any of its long-term care facilities, the spike in Middle Township is a reminder that these locations are still vulnerable to COVID-19’s spread. According to the New Jersey COVID-19 Dashboard, the growth in Middle Township cases has occurred at the Oceana Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
The county case total now stands at 680, with 179 active cases, 441 individuals off quarantine, and 60 fatalities. Cape May County remains the county with the fewest total cases in the state.
Today, Gov. Phil Murphy announced 50 new fatalities, bringing the state’s COVID-19 death count in the state to 12,676. Murphy also said the state had 274 new confirmed cases on the last day. That is the smallest one-day total of new cases since mid-March.
The governor’s announcement came on the day that New Jersey entered Stage 2 of his multi-phased Road Back Plan. Outdoor dining and capacity limited in-store retail both began today.
During his presentation, Murphy said the metric continued to trend well, and Stage 3 may be “weeks rather than months” away. What that means in terms of the county’s all-important summer season was not clear, since the governor offered no dates.
