COURT HOUSE – June 10: New cases of COVID-19 in Cape May County have slowed to nearly a standstill.
Today, the county announced two new cases, one each in Middle Township and Wildwood, and both were community-based. The county’s total cases inched up to 664. The number of individuals removed from quarantine remains 435.
There were no new fatalities, leaving total deaths due to the virus outbreak at 53. Active cases are now 176.
These numbers arrive weeks after the county began to reopen activities, beginning with the easing of regulations regarding parks and golf courses April 29, and now including the use of beaches and boardwalks, curbside retail, charter fishing vessels, watercraft rentals, resumption of nonessential construction and elective surgeries, increased limits on gatherings and drive-in gatherings. Through it all, the trend in the numbers has remained positive.
The state officially enters, what Gov. Phil Murphy has termed, Stage 2 of the Road Back June 15.
State numbers today were also encouraging. Today was the 12th straight day in which new cases were under 1,000, with 611 additional cases, bringing the total since March 4 to 165,346. The grim news was that the state lost another 74 individuals.
The death toll stands at 12,377, less than 200 below the total number of New Jersey residents who died in World War II.
As preparation for a broader reopening, the state is expecting to add 1,600 new contact tracers this month to augment the 900 already working.
