COURT HOUSE – May 21: As Memorial Day weekend looms, the Cape May County Department of Health reported 15 new confirmed COVID-19 cases.
The department also reported three new related fatalities, all of which were associated with long-term care facilities.
In Lower Township, the county lost two women, ages 93 and 90. A 52-year-old man at the Woodbine Developmental Center succumbed to the coronavirus. County deaths related to COVID-19 now stand at 45, of which 36 were residents at long-term care locations.
The new cases were spread across seven municipalities. Middle Township had five, Lower Township and Ocean City each had three, and Cape May, Upper Township, North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest each had one.
Even with the double-digit increase, active cases declined from 218 yesterday to 208 today. The number of individuals removed from quarantine continued to grow, moving from 279 yesterday to 301 today, meaning 54% of the known positive cases have recovered sufficiently.
Today’s report shows only the second day since May 10 that the county reported a double-digit increase in new cases.
The state today reported an increase of 1,304 cases, with 98 new fatalities. State totals stand at 151,472 total cases since the first March 4, and 10,843 fatalities.
County officials urged everyone to continue “practicing social distancing and other daily habits to reduce our risk of exposure to the virus.”
