County Communications Center Still Handling Dennis, Woodbine 9-1-1 Calls

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Emergency Management Communications Center continues to answer 9-1-1 calls for Dennis Township, Woodbine and the Woodbine Developmental Center after Belleplain Emergency Corps 9-1-1 communications tower was struck by lightning in a line of severe thunderstorms on the afternoon of July 27.
According to county Emergency Management Director Francis J. McCall, officals from Belleplain and Emergency Management met on July 28 to address the problem and assist Belleplain in getting back online.
“The outage is transparent to the public, calls are being handled without lack of service,” said McCall.
Belleplain Emergency Corps Chief William King Sr. told the Herald his radio tower was hit by lighting. That caused damage to the radios and the phone lines.
Belleplain 9-1-1 dispatchers are currently in the county communications center to assist with the workload, according to King.
Parts are being flown to complete repairs that are expected to have the 9-1-1 system back up sometime July 31, according to King.
