Contract Awarded to Repair Avalon Jetty

By Vince Conti

AVALON – Avalon Borough Council awarded a $2.5 million contract to South State, Inc., of Bridgeton, Nov. 13 for the repair of the Eighth Street jetty, damaged in Winter Storm Jonas in 2016. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) agreed to $4 million in federal disaster funds for the jetty’s repair.
The engineer’s estimate for the project was $4.8 million, with the South State bid coming in over $2 million below the estimate. Borough Engineer Thomas Thornton said a review of the contractor and the personnel to be assigned to the project showed the level of expertise necessary to satisfactorily complete the effort.
The work is expected to continue throughout the winter.
