Contract Awarded for Avalon Jetty

By Vince Conti

AVALON – Avalon Borough Council approved a $200,000 contract with Mott MacDonald Sept. 11, for design, planning and bid specifications for the rehabilitation of the 8th Street jetty damaged by Winter Storm Jonas in 2016.
The contract award begins a process that should result in reconstruction of the jetty.
Following a 2018 side-scan radar examination of the jetty below the waterline, FEMA agreed that the damage caused by the storm had been more extensive than initially thought.
At a Lion’s Club presentation in August, Mayor Martin Pagliughi said that potential federal reimbursement for the project had increased from $1.4 to $4 million.
Assistant Business Administrator James Waldron told council that borough finance officials were looking at potential unused funds that could be redirected to the project from earlier capital bond issues. He said if a new bond issue was necessary, it would be introduced at the Sept. 26 council meeting.
