Congressional, County Hopefuls Meet Voters at LWV Evening

By Al Campbell

STONE HARBOR MANOR – The half dozen candidates for the Second Congressional District on Nov. 6 stood before about 75 voters Oct. 23 at the Wetlands Institute and told why they should get the seat.
The hour-long event, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Cape May County, billed as a Meet and Greet, not a debate, afforded each candidate five minutes to make a convincing statement why he or she was superior to the rest.
Appearing in alphabetical order were candidates for the U.S. House:
David W. Bowen Sr., “The People’s Agenda.”

Also appearing were Republican and Democratic candidates for Cape May County Surrogate and freeholder.
M. Susan Sheppard, Republican, and Jeff Sutherland, Democrat, both Ocean City residents, explained their reasons for seeking the Surrogate’s post, held by W. Robert Hentges, since 1972. The Surrogate is one of three state Constitutional officers in the county. The others are sheriff and county clerk.
Freeholder candidates, Republican Leonard Desiderio, the incumbent, and Democrat Walter Deegan told why they wanted to be given the opportunity to serve on the board that oversees county government.
