CREST HAVEN – A $2.03 million contract was awarded by freeholders May 12 to R. Wilkinson & Son Construction, Inc. to construct a new safari cafe near the entrance of the Cape May County Zoo.
The Absecon-based firm was deemed the lowest responsible bidder of seven firms that submitted bids for the project, according to Allison Hansen, of the Purchasing Department. The work is to be done in 180 days and was to start May 13. The contract was “not to exceed” $2.03 million.
County Commons
As work continues on the renovation of County Commons, in Rio Grande, the site of the former Kmart store, freeholders awarded a $238,500 contract May 12 to Allied Signage Corp., of Farmingdale, to furnish and install two exterior pylon signs. The firm was one of five that submitted bids for the work.
Those signs will advertise the site on routes 47 and 9.
Stone Harbor Traffic Study
County Engineer Robert Church informed the board of a traffic study, in Stone Harbor, that was requested to help upgrade pedestrian safety at 96th Street and Third Avenue. The study will also consider the traffic signals at the location.
The board approved a resolution for a “not-to-exceed” $5,000 to Stantec Consulting Services Inc., of Toms River, to undertake the task.
Church said one of the points of the study will be a left turn southbound onto Ocean Drive, at the intersection.
In a separate resolution, the county accepted prior work done by the same firm for Stone Harbor Boulevard improvements. The final payment, totaling $24,535, was paid from two bond ordinances, with $2,333 of the balance paid by motor vehicle fines.
Magnolia Drive
In two separate resolutions, the county reduced the speed limit on Magnolia Drive, between Mechanic Street and Court House-South Dennis Road, from 35 mph to 25 mph. The change was made after the County Engineer’s Office conducted a study. The lower speed took effect immediately.
The road curves from along the railroad tracks to the Acme Shopping Center and ends at the heavily-traveled Court House-South Dennis Road.
A no-parking zone was established along the west side of Magnolia Drive, from Church Street north to 35 feet north of Romney Place, in Court House.
