LOWER TOWNSHIP — Richard M. Teitelman School Guidance Counselor Gail Schmidtchen presented citations to mentors from the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Cape May.
She said the student mentoring program has been in effect for five years.
The group has consistently had 20 or more volunteers hailing from all over the nation, said Schmidtchen,
“They have found time from their busy schedules, they’re mothers, there’re fathers, they have a lot of commitments but yet they find the time to come at least once a week and meet with our students,” said Schmidtchen.
She said Coast Guard Chaplin LCDR Joseph Coffey (on loan from the Navy) spoke to the school’s multicultural club about his experiences living in France and Belgium.
Schmidtchen said some mentors made crafts with student at Christmas.
Mentors have also helped students with their homework.
“This has been the highlight of my year,” said Schmidtchen, who is retiring at the end of the school year.
