Chinese Delegation Visits County Seeking Tourism Insights

COURT HOUSE – A delegation of 25 officials from the Policy Research Department of Hainan Provincial Party Committee of the Hainan Province of the People’s Republic of China traveled to Cape May County July 5. 
According to a release, the trip was part of a mission to the United States to visit U.S. counterparts to learn and exchange ideas on tourism marketing and promotion and the interactive and integrated marketing of convention and festival tourism in the U.S.
The meeting was hosted by the county Department of Tourism and was held in the freeholder meeting room in the County Administration Building. Joining the meeting were 25 Hainan officials, an interpreter, and county representatives.
Diane Wieland, director of the Department of Tourism, presented information about tourism marketing and the diverse marketing efforts of the county to promote the Jersey Cape as an expanded destination.
Doreen Talley, executive director of the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce, spoke about festivals. She gave information about developing and expanding festivals as a way to bring visitors to the area during the shoulder season and grow revenue for local businesses.
John Lynch, director of sales for the Wildwoods Convention Center, cited convention sales as an economic driver to the Wildwoods and the county. Lynch highlighted the number and variety of conventions and meetings held annually in the Wildwoods.
The delegation was hosted for lunch by the freeholders before they took a tour of some of the area’s top attractions.
Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton welcomed the delegation and presented them with a county pin and a Cape May Diamond key chain as a souvenir of their visit.
Cape May Mayor Clarence Lear presented the group with a proclamation welcoming them to Cape May.
The group toured Cape May and the Wildwoods, ending with a tour of the Wildwoods Convention Center.
The Hainan Province is an island located at the southernmost tip of China and one of the nation’s smallest provinces, and the largest island under the jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of China.
The delegation will be in the U.S. for four months, visiting other tourism destinations.
