China Trims Recyclables

By Vince Conti

AVALON – At the Sept. 26 Avalon Council work session Solicitor Nicole Curio said that the usual multiyear shared services agreement with the county Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) for recycling services was being limited to a period of one year.
As Curio explained, “The market for recyclable material is extremely volatile” due to a change in China’s willingness to accept as much of the material as it had in the past.
According to Curio, the MUA does business with a company that ultimately moves the recyclable material it accepts in the United States to China.
With China accepting “far less material,” the market is uncertain and projections for future years are problematic.
