COURT HOUSE – May 27: Cape May County reported 18 new cases today, the largest single-day increase since May 15. Some of the growth in cases may be an artifact of a lag in reporting over the holiday weekend.
The total number of cases the county has experienced is now 612, with 316 of those individuals off quarantine and 249 still representing active cases. There have been 47 fatalities.
The county population centers of Lower and Middle townships accounted for six new cases each today. The report also showed Upper Township with three new cases, Ocean City with two and Dennis Township with one.
With Gov. Phil Murphy saying the state is “roughly one month on our road back” from the crisis, the state reported 148 additional fatalities and 970 new cases. Total COVID-19 fatalities in the state now stand at 11,339 out of 156,628 cases.
Murphy said the number of hospitalizations continues to improve. Today, there are 2,761 COVID-19 patients in the state’s 71 hospitals.
Today’s numbers come as the county freeholders shaved five days from the county’s ease of short-term rentals, voting May 26 to open hotel and motel short-term rentals immediately, rather than waiting for June 1, the scheduled date in the county’s earlier declaration. The initial opening of hotel and motels involve capacity limits up to a maximum of 60% until June 22, when establishments may resume operating at 100%.
