STONE HARBOR – The Borough of Stone Harbor unveiled its electric car charging station July 15 at its 94th Street parking lot on Second Avenue.
According to Mickey McLaughlin, co-founder and managing partner of U-Go Stations, this is the only Level 3 charging station in the tri-county region of Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland counties.
Avalon was the first to put in a station, also with U-Go, Aug. 5, 2011, but the Avalon station is a Level 2 device.
The new, Level 3 technology allows a full charge in about 30 minutes as compared to two hours or more for a full charge at a Level 2.
Times vary also depending on the level of charge needed by the vehicle.
Mayor Suzanne Walters was present to cut the ribbon. She was surrounded by most members of the borough council along with Assemblyman R. Bruce Land (D-1st).
John O’Sullivan, vice president of U-Go, said that the cost for a full charge is $5.20 with an additional $0.20 fee per minute on the device. Those figures would mean a full charge, lasting 30 minutes, would run a little over $11. Mileage would then depend on the make and model of the vehicle.
The island is well equipped to support visitors since newer electric car models allow for the quick charge technology available at the Level 3 device, while older models or hybrids may still require a Level 2 charging station.
