CAPE MAY POINT — The second floor of the borough’s Fire Hall, used for official meetings, now has an elevator and other improvements to offer handicapped access.
The borough received a $400,000 grant from the Department of Community Affairs. The state Attorney General’s Office had informed the borough the second floor of the fire hall could no longer be a polling place for elections.
Doorways, floor surfaces and restrooms were also made accessible for those with disabilities. While the fire hall had “chair” elevator to the second floor, it only transported the person and not their wheelchair or scooter.
An entrance leading to the elevator was added to the building, separated from the fire engines on the first floor.
The hall is owned by the Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Company, which allows use by the borough government.
