CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council established a Municipal Taxation and Revenue Study Committee March 3.
The committee will review council’s budgeting and revenue-raising practices.
The idea for the study group arose from a presentation Dec. 3 by Dennis Crowley, who was representing the Taxpayers’ Association.
In a presentation consisting of over 60 PowerPoint slides, Crowley argued that costs associated with the city’s tourist-based economy fall on the residential property taxpayer by default, without appropriate consideration of other revenue alternatives.
Crowley explained that a cost-center approach to budgeting might help alleviate what he called an escalating burden on the residential property owner.
Changes were made to the resolution up to a late vote at the end of the March 3 City Council Meeting.
