CAPE MAY – After months of disagreement on the process for making appointments to city boards, commissions and committees, Cape May City Council agreed on a protocol at its Jan. 7 meeting.
The protocol calls for immediate notification, to the clerk, council members and the city manager, of all available positions on such bodies. It requires that the clerk publish the opening on the city’s website and bulletin board for three weeks.
Interested applicants will have up to four weeks from the initial positing to submit a letter of interest, with appropriate contact information. The applicant may also list qualifications he or she thinks relevant.
To deal with concerns over adequate sharing of information across the council, each member of council will be notified of letters of interest by the clerk. Council members will individually submit choices to the clerk, with all final appointments made by resolution of the council.
The process applies to positions for which the council has the appointing authority. It does not apply to mayoral appointments.
