Borough to Run EV Charging Stations

AVALON – In 2011, Avalon became the first municipality in the state to offer a public electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The initial venture was part of a public-private partnership with U-Go Stations, a company that began in 2010 to offer EV charging stations across a multi-state distributed network. The charging stations were self-operated, allowing the driver to plug in the car and return when it was charged, often with a notice via the internet.

At its March 13 meeting, Avalon Borough Council discussed plans for the borough to assume full responsibility for a new dual car changing station, ending the partnership with a private vendor. Rates would be set by the municipality’s chief financial officer who could alter rates depending upon how much use the station receives.
