COURT HOUSE – Freeholder Kristine Gabor reminds residents and visitors that the 2013 edition of A Guide to Accessing Cape May County’s Beaches and Surf Chairs for People with Disabilities is available on the Cape May County Website, capemaycountygov.net, through the County Department of Tourism and on the website of the NJ Department of Human Services/Division of Disability Services.
The Guide, introduced in 2007, has been revised for 2013 to reflect improvements in beach accessibility that have been implemented over the year by some municipalities.
This brochure, produced by the CMC Department of Aging and Disability Services in association with the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the CMC Department of Tourism, provides detailed information regarding the accessibility of beaches located in Avalon, Cape May City, Cape May Point, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, Strathmere in Upper Township and the Wildwoods. Also, it highlights the investment these municipalities have made in surf chairs (Ocean City alone has 54); those beach accessible wheelchairs with large, balloon-type wheels that don’t get stuck in the sand.
Additionally, the Guide presents Beach Patrol contact information, best access points to the boardwalks/promenades and to the beaches, availability and safe use of surf chairs and the processes for reserving them and location of accessible rest rooms and parking in each of the named municipalities. The guiding principle for this vacation planning resource is to enable individuals with disabilities and their families to plan ahead for the fullest enjoyment of their time at the Jersey Cape, whether their stay includes one day or several weeks at the beach.
