Bayshore Road Flagged for Beautification?

By Jack Fichter

VILLAS — Picture this: colorful flags, changed by season, along the length of Bayshore Road.
Lower Township Chamber of Commerce President Sherri Hemingway presented the idea to Lower Township Council Monday.
Mayor Michael Beck said the cooperation of all groups in the township was being sought to place flags from North Cape May to the north end of Villas.
Hemingway proposed a block party and “green” fair June 5, 2010 to raise funds to purchase flags and mounting hardware for utility poles. She said she had contacted Atlantic City Electric and Verizon seeking permission to mount flags on their poles.
The flags are about three square feet in size, she said.
The cost, per flag including mounting hardware for the utility poles, is about $250 to $300, said Hemingway. She said the flags could be changed for holiday seasons.
A beef-and-beer event will be held Oct. 24 at Bayview Inn as a fundraiser, she said.
Jay Witmoyer, a member of the Mayor’s Advisory Board, said the chamber asked the board to assemble a list of all civic, service and social clubs and churches in the township.
Beck will send a letter to each group and invite them to a meeting Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at Township Hall with the hope they will cooperate with the Bayshore Road beautification project, and work together on other worthy causes.
“It’s great to have a town, but greater to have a community,” he said.
Beck said 30 to 40 groups have been identified in the township. The plan is to put all the groups on the township’s Web site with links to their Web sites and include a calendar of events throughout the township.
Beck asked that all groups provide an e-mail address to Township Hall. He suggested the block party run from Village Road near Township Hall to Carolina Avenue.
Hemingway said she was seeking volunteers to help with the events.
