Avalon Jetty to Be Scanned by Sonar

By Vince Conti

AVALON – One year after Winter Storm Jonas, Avalon Borough Engineer Thomas Thornton explained to Borough Council Jan. 24 that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has accepted the fact that the storm was responsible for damage to the Eighth Street jetty.
Before moving forward with efforts to get FEMA funding for repairs, Thornton said that the borough is having the Coastal Research Center of Stockton University do a side-scan sonar study of the underwater portions of the jetty.
The technology uses sonar soundings that fan out and create side-to-side computer imagery of the ocean floor or of underwater structures.
In this case, it will allow engineers to see damage to the jetty below the water line.
The technology has been used in a variety of applications as varied as marine archaeology, imaging along the continental shelf, and locating debris that may be dangerous for marine vessels. The military has its applications as well, including locating mines.
Ever seen a large area of surface-feeding fish? They make for easy fishing until they head back under. Some fishing charters use this technology to inform clients to which side of the boat the fish have moved.
