Audio Equipment Failure in Avalon

By Leslie Truluck

AVALON – Borough Council had to recess its regular meeting May 13 due to failure of its new audio recording equipment.
Solicitor Michael Donohue said open public records laws require verbatim accounts of meetings.
After being restored, then failing again, a recording device was borrowed from the Avalon Police Department in order to lawfully continue the meeting.
Last February, a brand new, state-of-the-art sound and recording system including new wireless microphones, speakers and assisted listening devices was installed in Borough Hall.
Public Relations Officer Scott Wahl said the new equipment enables the borough to record the meetings onto its server and audio compact discs. Wahl said recording issues were the result of a hardware error and a borough employee was able to debug it.
He said the equipment provider agreed to supply a backup system in case of future failure.
The borough contracted $15,329 total with Gramco Business Communications of Clifton for hardware, software, delivery, installation, configuration and support with a one-year warranty.
