AME Church Can Be Saved

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – In June, a commercial vehicle accidentally pulled down an electric wire that started a fire in the Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church on Franklin Street directly across from the city’s firehouse. Firefighters could not attack the blaze until the electric utility was able to secure power in the immediate area to deaden the live wire. Fears at the time were that heavy damage to the historic structure might mean the building could not be saved.
At an Oct. 16 city council meeting, Deputy Mayor Shaine Meier said that city engineers had recently inspected the building and deemed it is able to be repaired. He urged residents to “get behind” an effort to restore the church.
