PETERSBURG – Upper Township Committee held its annual reorganization meeting Jan. 6. Girl Scout Troop 44475 and Boy Scout Troop 79 presented the colors.
Mia Pancoast sang the national anthem, and a moment of silence was held for Jim Kelly, chairperson of the Planning Board, who died unexpectedly. The position would not immediately be filled in his honor.
Two veteran Committee members, John Coggins and Hobart “Hobie” Young, were re-elected for three-year terms. Municipal Court Judge James Birchmeier administered the oath of office to Coggins, while Young was sworn in by Sen. Michael Testa (R-1st).
Family and friends attended the ceremony, as well as local elected officials, including Freeholders Will Morey and E. Marie Hayes.
Mayor Richard Palombo and Deputy Mayor Edward Barr were unanimously selected by committee members for renewed terms in their respective positions. Palombo was presented with a plaque commemorating 20 years of service as mayor and a representative of U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s (R-2nd) office, Chris Chin, presented Palombo with a certificate of service, noting that Van Drew would mention Palombo and the accomplishments of Upper Township during his next weekly appearance on C-SPAN on the House floor.
