Try your hand at crafts and trades of the 1800s on Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Historic Cold Spring Village’s annual Hands-On & Homespun event.
Not only will village artisans be demonstrating activities from the past, visitors will be welcome to participate in a variety of simple tasks from “The Age of Homespun.” This fun family event is sponsored by Smeltzer and Sons Feed and Pet Supplies.
“This event will let (visitors) see for themselves just how our ancestors did their jobs and made the items that they needed,” said Anne Salvatore, HCSV Executive Director.
The New Jersey Blacksmith Association will be giving demonstrations all weekend. Special wool production workshops will be offered in the afternoons, including sheep shearing, dyeing and spinning.
Additional fiber arts demonstrations of braiding and lace making will be presented. Dulcimer musician Bonnie Leigh will present an interactive program during the afternoon on both days.
Richard Aldorasi of the Philadelphia Handmade Paper Company will show how rag paper was made in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Children will also be able to take part in different fun and educational hands-on craft activities around the grounds at many buildings including the pottery, woodshop, and basket shop—and keep their crafts! Games, activities and dress-up clothes will also be offered all weekend at the family activity area.
Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Friday through Aug. 31, with featured events every weekend.
