WILDWOOD – Wildwood City Fire Department responded to Spicer and Arctic avenues March 23 at 10:05 a.m. for a reported gas leak. On arrival of Quint Company 3, under the command of Capt. Aldo Sacco, they reported a ruptured gas main which was struck by construction workers conducting street work in the area.
The leak was significant enough that a multiple dwelling located in the 3900 block Arctic Avenue had to be evacuated.
Chief Daniel Speigel requested an additional Engine Company to respond. Engine Company 3, under the command of Capt. Daniel Dunn, arrived and assisted with providing hose lines for protective measures along with securing utilities and evacuation of the dwelling on Arctic Avenue. High levels of explosive gases were detected in the building that was evacuated.
Approximately eight occupants were removed from the building and placed in ambulances located nearby. No injuries were reported.
South Jersey Gas (SJG) units arrived and was briefed of the situation. As additional SJG officials arrived they began to mitigate the leak all while being protected by charged hose lines if an ignition occurred.
The leak in the street was secured, the building was ventilated removing all gases from the dwelling and the tenants were allowed to return.
Wildwood Police units secured vehicle and pedestrian traffic at four intersections approaching the area. Fire and police units cleared the scene after operating on scene for about an hour and a half.
