‘From Around Cape Island’

By On Deck Staff

SOMA NewArt Gallery is pleased to announce “From Around Cape Island,”
a solo exhibition of new ocean, marsh, and field-scapes by renowned regional artist
Stan Sperlak. For his show at SOMA, Sperlak has created an outstanding body of work inspired by the dramatic natural beauty of the Cape May peninsula. Skillfully rendered,
this sensational new work brings another dimension to a career that has made
Stan Sperlak one of the most respected and collected artists working in the region.
The southern-most reaches of the Jersey coast have long been a favorite subject of the artist. When Stan paints from nature, he distills it into its essential color and form, to enhance the visual appeal by reducing the discordant realities into a subtle yet powerful unity of color and form. In this new work for SOMA, the beaches, skies, dunes, marshes and fields are all represented in a deeply colorful and painterly way. Although much detail is suggested, close inspection of these gorgeous pastels will reveal that Sperlak’s latest paintings are more color fields with brush marks that allow the viewer to fill in the details and moods. Each pastel painting captures the subtle natural beauty of the Jersey Shore, with the vivid mastery of color, texture, and form.
Sperlak is a juried member of the Pastel Society of America, the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters, the Maryland Pastel Society, and Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Stan teaches pastel painting in the plein-air tradition at his many pastel workshops through out the year.
Stan will introduce this latest work to his numerous collectors and fans at the artist’s Opening Reception at Cape May’s SOMA NewArt Gallery, Saturday Evening, September 6th from 6 to 9pm. Food and drink will be served catered by 410 Bank Street Restaurant.
The Gallery is located at Carpenter’s Square Mall, 31 Perry Street, in Cape May.
The exhibition of Stan Sperlak’s New Pastel Paintings “From Around Cape Island” runs through October 19th. The Gallery is open daily.
SOMA NewArt Gallery, opened in June of 2007, Janet Miller founded SOMA as
the first Fine Arts Gallery in Cape May. SOMA (which stands for South of the Mall)
is dedicated to showcasing and promoting important regional artists in a
Metropolitan-SOHO style exhibition space, and at prestigious National and International Art Fairs. This past winter SOMA represented its artists at the New York International Art Fair, and has just been accepted to exhibit in the ArtNow Fair this December in Miami Beach during the prestigious Miami Basel International Art Fair. Comment’s Miller, “the wise art collector will surely want to acquire Sperlak’s work before it reaches international exposure later this year.”
