Woman Dies in Villas Structure Fire

An fire at 6:45 a.m. Jan. 4 claimed the life of a Villas woman

VILLAS – On Jan. 4, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Lower Township Police were dispatched to the 200 block of East Florida Avenue for a reported structure fire.
According to a police release, upon their arrival, the homeowner was outside being attended to by neighbors, suffering from smoke inhalation and other minor injuries. The victim’s wife did not make it out of the house. She was found in the upstairs bedroom likely overcome by smoke. Her identity was not released.
The home did not have working smoke alarms.
 
The Villas Fire Department, with the aid of Erma Fire and Town Bank Fire, responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
Lower Township Rescue was also on scene. The Cape May County Prosecutors Office and the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office were also at the scene.
 
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Cape May County Prosecutors Office and the Lower Township Police.
