SWAINTON- Firefighters responded to a structure fire here at 1758 Route 9 around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb 28.
The fire was reported in the basement of the home. When police arrived they reported smoke showing.
Stations 70 and 71 were dispatched to the scene. The fire was placed under control shortly after they arrived.
According to a release, the occupants of the upstairs apartment Kristene Velez and Christina Ayars smelled smoke inside the residence and went outside to investigate. They observed flames and smoke coming from the basement window. They alerted two juveniles ages 11 and 14 who were home alone in the downstairs apartment to evacuate the residence.
Fire trucks parked in front of the home caused delays for about an hour as traffic was reduced to one lane. The County Fire Police were requested to the scene to assist.
The Cape May chapter of the American Red Cross was requested to the scene to assist with the needs of the displaced.
Investigators from the County Fire Marshal’s office were called to the scene to determine the cause which is under investigation. Middle Township Patrolman Jason Sill and Detective Clint Stocker are also investigating.
