Firefighters Respond to Gas Leak, Fire in Construction Zone

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – Wildwood City Firefighters responded to the 2800 block of Park Boulevard at approximately 7:30 a.m. May 8 for a reported gas leak and fire in a construction area.
On arrival, firefighters found workers preparing the street for paving had accidentally struck a gas line, which then ignited.
Wildwood Police Officers were in the process of evacuating nearby homes. Firefighters stretched a hose line as a precaution while waiting for the gas company to arrive. Firefighters also checked the evacuated buildings for high levels of natural gas, finding none.
South Jersey Gas arrived and was preparing to make the repair. The fire was then extinguished allowing the gas company into the area to stop the gas leak. Firefighters stood by with a hose line as a precaution while the gas company secured the leak.
Units operating on scene were Engine 38, NWFD Engine 2 and Wildwood PD.
No injuries were reported and residents were allowed back into their homes about an hour later.
