Blaze Heavily Damages The Elward House

CAPE MAY — Fire, tentatively believed to have been electrical in origin, heavily damaged the third story of The Elward House and displaced guests at Decatur Street and Columbia Avenue apartments, Aug. 24 at about 2 p.m. No injuries were reported.
According to Cape May Fire Chief Jerry Inderweis Jr., when first units arrived, heavy fire and smoke were rolling from the third floor rear apartment of the wood frame structure.
The heat was so intense that windows, facing Columbia Avenue, were blown out, said Inderweis.
Fire investigators believe the fire began in an electrical window fan, but a thorough investigation will be undertaken to determine the fire’s exact origin.
Responding to the call were Cape May City Fire Department and Town Bank Fire Company.
