DIAMOND BEACH – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is responsible for the management of the public land to the south of Diamond Beach, known as Two Mile Beach Unit (TMBU), as part of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge (CMNWR). During this time of year, April 1 – September 30, this section of beach is closed to public access, as migratory shorebirds and seabirds utilize the habitat for feeding, resting, and most importantly, nesting. Many migratory species use this area as a stopover site before reembarking on their extensive journey, while others call the refuge home. Some species of federal and state listed threatened and endangered birds, like the Piping Plover, will hopefully nest again this year at CMNWR.
It is important to protect these species from human disturbances in order to ensure reproductive success. Since 1973, North American shorebird populations have decreased by nearly 70%; however, efforts taken by federal agencies, state agencies, conservation societies, and even you have helped stabilize these populations.
Visitors are always welcome to enjoy the CMNWR by using the Dune Trail which begins at the boundary with Diamond Beach or the bike trail which can be accessed at the south end of Seaview Drive. There are two observation platforms which can be used to view shorebird activity from a responsible distance. We appreciate your cooperation in our nationwide attempts to protect shorebirds and look forward to your visit in some of our other biodiverse areas in the meantime.
