Tremors Rattle Cape, Many Call Police

By Herald Staff

RIO GRANDE – At 10:44 a.m. Nov. 14, a widespread tremor shook the ground here as well as in other parts of Cape May County. At first, many thought the movement of ground was an explosion, or that the wind was shaking their home.
At 11:01 a.m., a second less intense tremor rattled the ground.
By that time, many in Lower Township and North Wildwood began to call their local police departments reporting the incidents.
One report, deemed false by Lower Township police, was that there had been an explosion, because the person’s house shook.
North Wildwood police received calls from throughout that city reporting similar earth-shaking instances.
From scanner reports, the rumbling was not isolated to one area.
The Herald has also received social media reports from the community regarding the tremors.
Jennifer Heller of Burleigh wrote, “Just wondering if anyone else had messaged about their houses shaking twice? The second one was stronger and longer. Windows, walls and floors shook for a few seconds.”
Eric Hartem of Eldora lives off of Rte. 47. Hartem reported feeling something around 11:05 a.m. “All the glasses in my house were rattling,” Hartem said. “I can always tell when a big truck goes down the road but there haven’t been any today. I haven’t seen any jets overhead either.”
Similar mysterious tremors were reported Oct. 29 at around 2 p.m.
Just like last time, The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors earthquake activity as it happens, is not reporting an earthquake in Southern New Jersey.
Many have speculated that the tremors may be linked to a recent joint military exercise known as “Frontier Sentinel,” that includes the Navy, Coast Guard and Canadian military forces or perhaps tests of supersonic aircraft in an area off the coast known as “the racetrack,” which is controlled by the federal Department of Defense and runs from Ocean City, Md. to Atlantic City, are to blame.
However, nothing concrete has been confirmed and until then, the cause of the Cape May County tremors remains a mystery.
