CREST HAVEN – Cape May County Health Officer Kevin Thomas on Aug. 20 announced that a recreational bathing site in Cape May, closed due to high enterococcus bacteria counts earlier this week is now open.
On Aug.17, 1,000 gallons of raw sewage were reported to have discharged to a storm drain which discharges directly into the surf area of Ocean Street and the beach.
Official results of water samples taken in and around the Ocean Street beach on August 19th show enterococcus bacteria counts within acceptable limits. Thomas said, “Based on these results, the area between the two jetties is once again open to recreational activities such as bathing, swimming, etc…”
Through the Coastal Water Monitoring Program a total of 59 ocean and eight (8) Back Bay recreational sites are monitored weekly from May until September 7, 2009. Beach closings are available by calling the Cape May County Ocean Water Quality Hotline at 609-463-6581 or on the Health Department website at cmchealth.net.
