Lake Lily Looking Green

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY POINT — “It isn’t easy being green,” sang Kermit the Frog.
Lily probably agrees. Lake Lily that is.
The freshwater lake continues to battle algae or grass growth or whatever is causing green patches on the lake.
Lake Lily Committee Chairwoman Francine Nietubicz reported to Borough Commission at a July 10 meeting. She said a Clean-Flo aeration system was installed in the lake eight months ago.
Nietubicz said the compressors recently received maintenance from Clean-Flo. They indicated it could take one to two years of operation to get all the algae out of the lake, she said.
While the lower end of the lake near the island is showing less “green” than in the past, the upper end of Lake Lily is showing more coverage. Nietubicz said some of the green coloration may be from grass growing on the bottom of the lake piercing the surface.
She said at the edges of the lake, a clean, sandy bottom is visible instead of muck as a result of the Clean-Flo system.
“It is starting to do what we purchased it to do,” she said.
She said a solution for grass growing from the bottom of the lake would be sought if that were taking place.
Meanwhile, families of swans and ducks seem not to be bothered by the greenery or the hum of the two Clean-Flo compressors sending bubbles to surface of the lake.
