WEST CAPE MAY — High waves from Hurricane Bill sent ocean water through areas roped off to protect Piping Plover and Least Tern nests at the Nature Conservancy at the Lower Cape May Meadows between Cape May City and Cape May Point State Park Aug. 23.
Brent Burke, program manager for the Nature Conservancy, Delaware Bayshore Program, said there were no birds nesting in the restricted area. He said the saltwater intrusion was actually beneficial to migratory shore birds that feed on invertebrates in wet sand.
Water inundated the beach accessed by the Mt. Vernon Avenue ramp and created ponds in front of the dunes.
