Group Angling for Applicants for New Fisheries, Aquaculture Scholarship

By Herald Staff

SANDY HOOK –– The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC) and its New Jersey Sea Grant College Program have opened the application phase for the Stew Tweed Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarships.
The scholarship program, will perpetuate the memory of Stew Tweed, a long-time Marine Extension Agent for New Jersey who passed away one year ago this week.
The annual awards will be given to one graduating high-school or vocational school senior and one undergraduate or graduate student pursuing studies, careers or research focused on aquaculture or fisheries.
The scholarship fund was officially announced at a special ceremony in Cape May last October.
Tweed’s 27 years of service to New Jersey’s commercial fishing industry and his contributions toward reviving the state’s oyster populations were recognized by state Secretary of Agriculture Charles Kuperus and Senator Jeff Van Drew (D-1st).
Beginning in early April, the scholarship applications will be reviewed by a committee represented by appointees from the private sector, government and education.
The scholarships, valued at $1,000 and $1,500, will be awarded in mid-May. Award recipients will be announced during the NJMSC Annual State of the Shore Media event on Thursday, May 22 at The Seagull’s Nest on Sandy Hook.
