AVALON — More than two dozen volunteers braved rain showers on Sat. morning, Oct. 4 for an important environmental initiative in Avalon. The volunteers planted dune grass in the dunes located behind the bulkhead. The annual fall dune grass planting day is an annual effort by the Avalon Environmental Commission and supported by the Avalon Department of Public Works.
Nearly 50,000 dune grass stolons are being planted by the volunteers, the Avalon Department of Public Works, and by Bayshore Landscaping behind the seawall and along the dune system. Dune grass is resilient to many weather conditions at the Jersey Shore, including salinity, direct sun, extreme heat, and a lack of fertile soil. Dune grass helps fortify dunes which provide a strong line of defense for barrier islands during coastal storms. However, dune grass cannot survive when it is trampled by humans or motor vehicles.
Each year, Avalon also conducts an aerial dune grass fertilization project to help the dune grass continue to grow and strengthen dunes.
