RIO GRANDE — As is the annual tradition, the Herald placed a digital thermometer, facing north in the shade, to record the 3 p.m. temperature on the hottest forecast day of the year.
We were not disappointed, recording a temperature of 100.5 degrees in Rio Grande off Route 47.
Official 3 p.m. temperatures included: Woodine: 93, Wildwood: 90, Dennisville: 92, Viilas: 90 and Cape May at 88 degrees. After one more hot day, the heatwave is forecast to end.
