Avalon Council Tables Amended Beach Protection Ordinance

By Leslie Truluck

AVALON — Borough Council tabled Ordinance 618-2009 to amend its Beach Protection Ordinance to lift prohibition of pools in the high dune area Sept. 9, not because of the six residents who spoke in opposition, but due to outline errors.
After residents expressed concern that lifting pool prohibition would weaken borough powers to guard the dunes, all council members voted in favor on second reading.
Council President Charles Covington asserted amended ordinance doesn’t weaken the borough’s ability to protect the dunes and still requires applicants to go through a stringent process.
“Absolute denial just didn’t make sense,” he said.
It was tabled “in the interest of accuracy and completeness” after minor errors were discovered and will be reintroduced Sept. 23, Covington said.
Purpose and substance of the ordinance will not change.
